Foundation

SERVICE FOR SIGHT: Service for Sight is the official philanthropy of the Delta Gamma Fraternity and has been at the heart of its mission since 1936. At the Eta Theta Chapter of Delta Gamma, we are especially lucky to have one of the five national Delta Gamma Centers (DGC) right here in St. Louis, along with various other sight conservation and preservation organizations such as Kids Vision for Life, Society for the Blind, and MindsEye. We are actively involved in these organizations in a variety of capacities, volunteering weekly to assist with vision screenings and Beep Ball practices, as well as volunteering at larger events such as DGC’s Run for Sight and Society for the Blind’s Visionary Gala. In all of these ways, we are truly committed to the Service for Sight mission, supporting those with visual impairments in the greater St. Louis community in every way that we can. In advocating for visual impairment awareness, we join together as sisters, united under one common mission, to truly make a difference in the lives of others and to “do good” in our communities.

MARY RYDER HOME: The Mary Ryder Home is a nonprofit residential care facility that serves low-income elderly women in the St. Louis area. Mary Ryder Home is just one way that we “do good” in our local community. Every Sunday afternoon, a group of SLU Delta Gammas volunteers to spend time, play games, and engage in meaningful conversation with some of the wonderful residents at the Mary Ryder Home. Besides this weekly commitment, we also actively participate in various events that the Mary Ryder Home puts on, such as holiday parties and door decorating. During the COVID-19 pandemic, members went above and beyond to video chat with residents weekly, continuing to forge special bonds of friendship with the women at the Mary Ryder Home, even in a virtual world. Through our service with the Mary Ryder Home, we truly embody Article II which states, “The objects of this Fraternity shall be to foster high ideals of friendship among women, to promote their educational and cultural interests, to create in them a true sense of social responsibility, and to develop in them the best qualities of character.”

FOR SERVICE FOR SIGHT!

Meet Skyler

2022-2023 vp: Foundation

Hello!

My name is Skyler Hurle and I am currently serving as vp: Foundation for the Delta Gamma, Eta Theta chapter at Saint Louis University. Our chapter's motto is to “do good” and one way that our chapter follows that motto is through service. Delta Gamma’s philanthropy is Service for Sight. Meaning we advocate for vision loss, as well as serve those in the blind and visually impaired community.

Only a few miles away from campus we have one of the five Delta Gamma Centers (DGC)! The DGC provides early interventions for children who are struggling with visual impairment, as well as education and activities for the families.  Along with the DGC our members volunteer by engaging in events with the St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired (SLSBVI) , complete visions screening for those in the St. Louis community through Kids Vision for Life, work with MindsEye and engage in other opportunities in the Saint Louis area!

In addition to our volunteer work, Eta Theta also hosts an annual AnchorSplash competition, which is our main fundraising event. AnchorSplash is a synchronized swimming and dance competition among fraternity members at SLU. Our members are able to participate by choreographing and coaching teams, while others cheer the participants on! Not only is this a great way for our members to connect, but people are also able to connect with others in the Greek Life community.

Throughout my time in Delta Gamma doing service has been one of my greatest joys. From ice skating and pumpkin patch events with the DGC, vision galas with the SLSBVI and so many more events I have been able to bring smiles to others while also spending time with my sisters. As well as spending time with AnchorSplash, which is guaranteed to make you laugh, all while raising money. Through these moments comes special memories that each delta gamma cherishes.

Thank you for taking your time to learn more about the “do good” sisterhood!

Anchor Splash

Anchor Splash is a chance for our SLU community to get involved, get educated, contribute to Service for Sight, and do good! SLU’s Fraternity & Sorority Life and the greater SLU community get first-hand involvement with our philanthropy with the event kicking off our philanthropy week. Our event features the fraternities dancing in synchronized swimming routines and swimming in relay competitions. Following this exciting and hilarious event, Eta Theta continues to raise awareness about visual impairments and fundraise during philanthropy week with profit shares at local favorites, such as Chipotle, Whatever Floats Your Boat where partnered with Sigma Chi Fraternity to sell Root Beer Floats.

Hoops for Troops

Through our annual Hoops for Troops event, we seek to raise money for the Joining Forces Fund. This fund, one way in which we support Service for Sight, helps to donate grants to various organizations that aid blind and visually impaired servicemen and women. Hoops for Troops is a campus-wide basketball tournament put on by the Eta Theta Chapter of Delta Gamma at Saint Louis University Simon Recreation Center. The funds we raise through this event along with profit shares and raffles support the overall mission of Service for Sight, specifically by aiding blind or visually impaired veterans.
